PPF (Public Provident Fund) is a popular Government of India long-term savings scheme. Launched in 1968, 15-year lock-in, current rate 7.1% per annum (Q3 FY 2026-27, Oct–Dec 2026). EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) tax status — deposit is tax-deductible under the old regime up to Rs 1.5L (s.123 of the Income-tax Act 2025, old Section 80C), interest is tax-free, maturity is tax-free.

This free PPF Calculator gives you: (a) Total invested over tenure, (b) Total interest earned, (c) Maturity value, (d) Year-wise interest accrual table — simply enter the annual deposit (Rs 500 minimum to Rs 1.5L maximum), expected interest rate (default 7.1%, reviewed quarterly by the government), and tenure (default 15 years, extendable in 5-year blocks).
Important: Deposit timing matters! PPF interest is calculated on the "lowest balance between the 5th and end of month". Therefore, a yearly deposit made by 5 April earns interest for all 12 months, a deposit made on 1-5 March earns 1 month, and one made after 5 March earns nothing for that year. This calculator assumes one deposit by 5 April of every year, for as many years as the tenure (15 deposits for 15 years). A PPF account matures on 1 April after 15 complete financial years from the end of the year in which it was opened, so an account opened in April can take 16 deposits before maturity — the result here then understates the maturity value.
PPF vs ELSS vs Tax-Saver FD: PPF is government-backed, at a rate the government reviews every quarter (7.1% now). ELSS is market-linked and its returns vary. Tax-saver FD interest is taxable. All three share the same Rs 1.5L old-regime limit.
Use cases: Retirement corpus building, Child's education fund (15-year horizon is perfect for college), Daughter's marriage, Tax-saving investment, Emergency long-term fund.
PPF extension: After maturity, you can extend it in 5-year blocks with either the "with deposits" or "without deposits" option. At extension, the interest rate is the prevailing rate. A total period of 15 + 5 + 5 + ... = 25, 30, 35 years is possible.
