NISM-Series-X-A: Investment Adviser (Level 1) Certification Examination
What this chapter covers
Why a rupee today is worth more than a rupee tomorrow, and the arithmetic that follows: present and future value, compounding frequency, CAGR, EMI (PMT), loan tenure (NPER), ordinary annuities, annuities due and perpetuities, with the matching Excel functions.
What to master before the exam
- PV = FV ÷ (1 + r)^n and FV = PV × (1 + r)^n, with r and n adjusted for the compounding frequency (8% compounded quarterly = 2% for 4n periods); more frequent compounding gives a higher maturity value.
- CAGR = (End value ÷ Beginning value)^(1/n) − 1; for periods in days, raise to 365/days (e.g. NAV 11 to 13.50 in 450 days ≈ 18.07%).
- EMI with Excel PMT (rate ÷ 12, months), loan tenure with NPER; a Rs 30 lakh, 20-year loan at 6.5% gives an EMI of about Rs 22,367.
- Ordinary annuity (paid at period end, type 0) versus annuity due (paid at the start, type 1) — the annuity due is worth more; annuity tables give a factor (10 years at 5% = 7.7217).
- Perpetuity: PV = C ÷ r (Rs 10,000 a year at 8% = Rs 1,25,000); the higher the discount rate or the later the cash flow, the lower its present value.
Exam tip: Part of Module 1's 37 marks and the base for every numerical in the paper. Expect direct PV/FV/EMI/CAGR sums — practise with a calculator until each takes under two minutes, and always convert the rate and periods to the payment frequency first.

Question 1
Money available at the present time is worth more than the same amount in the future mainly because:
- Future money is not legal tender
- It has the potential to earn returns (or interest)
- Banks charge a fee on future receipts
- Interest rates never change
Show answer & explanation
Answer: B — It has the potential to earn returns (or interest)
Money now is worth more than the same amount later since it has the potential to earn returns; investors also have an instinctive preference for current consumption over future consumption.
Question 2
Other things remaining the same, the higher the discount rate, the present value of future cash flows will be:
- Lowerकम
- Higher
- Unchanged
- Equal to the future value
Show answer & explanation
Answer: A — Lower
The higher the discount rate, the lower the present value. The workbook’s example: ₹1,000 received after 3 years is worth ₹864 today at 5% (1,000/1.05³) but only ₹794 at 8% (1,000/1.08³).
Question 3
₹100 is placed in a one-month bank deposit yielding 6% p.a. What is its value after one month?
Show answer & explanation
Answer: D — ₹100.50
Monthly rate = 6%/12 = 0.5%; value = 100 × (1 + 0.005) = ₹100.50. So receiving ₹100 now is equivalent to receiving ₹100.50 after one month.
Question 4
Future inflows are discounted by a relevant rate to reach their present value. This rate is known as the:
- Inflation rate
- Coupon rate
- Discount rate (or return rate or interest rate)
- Tax rate
Show answer & explanation
Answer: C — Discount rate (or return rate or interest rate)
Future inflows are discounted to their present value at a rate known as the discount rate, return rate or interest rate; present inflows are increased to their future values at the compound interest rate.
Question 5
What is the effect of a greater frequency of compounding on returns, other things being equal?
- Interest is paid on interest more often, so returns earned through compounding are greater
- Returns are lower
- There is no effect on returns
- It affects only simple interest
Show answer & explanation
Answer: A — Interest is paid on interest more often, so returns earned through compounding are greater
The greater the frequency of compounding, the more often interest is paid on interest, and the greater the returns. In the workbook, ₹5 lakh at 8% for 5 years grows to ₹7,34,664 compounded annually but ₹7,42,974 compounded quarterly.
