What this chapter covers
An overview of what investors can buy — equity and preference shares, fixed income (government versus corporate, investment grade versus high yield), commodities, real estate, structured products, distressed securities and collectibles — and the channels: direct investing, RIAs and managed portfolios.
निवेश के प्रकार — इक्विटी, फिक्स्ड इनकम, कमोडिटी, रियल एस्टेट, स्ट्रक्चर्ड उत्पाद — और निवेश के माध्यम।
What to master before the exam
- Preference shares rank above equity for dividend and liquidation; cumulative versus non-cumulative and participating versus non-participating; DVRs (Tata Motors, 2008: one-tenth vote, 5% higher dividend).
- Credit spread = corporate yield − G-sec yield for the same maturity; the rating scale runs AAA to D, and BBB and above is investment grade, below BBB is high yield or junk.
- Soft commodities (grown, perishable, volatile) versus hard commodities (mined); gold is a safe haven with no current income; REITs give real-estate exposure with smaller outlays.
- Structured products (most commonly market-linked debentures) are not capital-protected or guaranteed; distressed securities ("fallen angels") need specialist skill; LRS allows up to USD 2,50,000 a year abroad.
- Mutual funds, PMS and AIFs are all SEBI-regulated managed portfolios; minimums are Rs 50 lakh for PMS and Rs 1 crore for an AIF, with lighter-touch regulation than mutual funds.
Exam tip: A short chapter in Module 3 (30 marks). Expect definitions: what investment grade means, which preference share accumulates unpaid dividend, and the PMS/AIF minimum ticket sizes.
