What this chapter covers
How investors get complaints resolved: the Consumer Protection Act, features of a robust grievance system, an IA's grievance set-up, the capital-market route (entity → SCORES → Smart ODR), banking (Integrated Ombudsman), insurance (IGMS, Insurance Ombudsman), pensions (CRA, NPS Trust) and the Securities Appellate Tribunal.
शिकायत निवारण — SCORES, ODR, बैंकिंग व बीमा लोकपाल, NPS ट्रस्ट और प्रतिभूति अपीलीय न्यायाधिकरण (SAT)।
What to master before the exam
- A robust system records the source, date and nature of each complaint, whether it can be resolved internally, status and action taken, ageing, and an escalation path.
- Capital markets: complain first to the entity, then on SEBI's SCORES portal, then Online Dispute Resolution through Smart ODR; SCORES does not take incomplete complaints, sub-judice matters or complaints about unlisted or wound-up companies.
- Banking: a three-tier internal process, then the RBI Integrated Ombudsman if there is no satisfactory reply within one month; the ombudsman passes an award if settlement fails within a month.
- Insurance: IRDAI's IGMS, then the Insurance Ombudsman — a recommendation within one month, an award within 3 months; NPS complaints go to the CRA, then the NPS Trust after 30 days, then the Ombudsman.
- Appeals against SEBI, IRDAI or PFRDA orders go to the SAT within 45 days, and from the SAT to the Supreme Court within 60 days.
Exam tip: Part of Module 6 (30 marks). Timelines (one month, 3 months, 30 days, 45 days, 60 days) and the order of escalation are the usual questions — draw the entity → SCORES → ODR ladder once and you will not forget it.
