What this chapter covers
Why retirement needs planning — longer lives, the largest corpus and no loans for it — the steps (expenses, income need, time horizon, corpus), the effect of inflation and expected return, the replacement-ratio and expense-protection methods, and employer superannuation through approved funds.
What to master before the exam
- Retirement has the longest accumulation and distribution periods and needs the largest corpus, and no company lends for it; retiring at 60 with a life expectancy of 80 means funding 20 years.
- At 6% inflation, goods costing Rs 100 today cost Rs 179 in 10 years, Rs 321 in 20 and Rs 574 in 30; Rs 60,000 a month at the start of retirement becomes Rs 1,07,451 after 10 years. Underestimating the years in retirement is longevity risk.
- Replacement ratio method: first-year income = pre-retirement income × the ratio (the standard 80% turns Rs 2,00,000 into Rs 1,60,000), then grown by inflation each year; the further away retirement is, the less accurate it becomes.
- Expense protection method: budget retirement expenses item by item — medical, travel, gifting and upkeep rise; loans, education and income tax fall (Ashish: Rs 45,000 a month today is Rs 1,44,321 after 20 years at 6%); it suits people near retirement.
- An approved superannuation fund is an irrevocable trust with at least 90% of its employees in India and benefits payable only in India; employers must arrange benefits through an IRDAI-registered life insurer, and the fund's income is exempt under Section 10(25)(iii).
Exam tip: Module 8 (Chapters 4–6) carries 30 marks. This chapter sets up the method used in every retirement case: inflate today's expenses to retirement with FV, then size the corpus. Know both estimation methods and their limitations.

Question 1
Growth-oriented investments are suitable for which stage of retirement savings?
- Income stage
- Accumulation stageसंचय (accumulation) चरण
- Investment stage
Show answer & explanation
Answer: C — Accumulation stage
The accumulation stage is when saving and investment for the retirement corpus is made. The workbook notes that investors may be willing to take higher risk in the accumulation period for higher return, while in the distribution stage the ability to take risk reduces. So growth-oriented investments suit the accumulation stage.
Question 2
Inflation does which of the following to retirement planning?
- Reduces the periodic savings required
- Reduces the nominal return generated by an investmentनिवेश से मिलने वाले नाममात्र (nominal) रिटर्न को घटाती है
- Increases the value of the corpus created
- Increases the retirement corpus required
Show answer & explanation
Answer: D — Increases the retirement corpus required
Per the workbook, the rate of inflation pushes up expenses and therefore the amount of retirement savings required, while the return earned by the corpus reduces it. Inflation raises the cost of expenses at retirement and keeps raising them during retirement, so the corpus required goes up.
Question 3
Life expectancy directly affects which of the following features of the retirement goal?
- Period in retirementसेवानिवृत्ति में अवधि (years in retirement)
- Monthly expenses in retirement
- Returns earned on the retirement corpus
Show answer & explanation
Answer: A — Period in retirement
"Years in retirement" run from the beginning of retirement to the end of life. The workbook says this period cannot be defined precisely but is estimated from life expectancy (average life expectancy for the gender, health, genetic factors, lifestyle). So life expectancy directly determines the period in retirement, and with it the corpus required.
Question 4
According to the workbook, why does the retirement goal need periodic monitoring?
- Because the income needed in retirement can be fixed with certainty at the start of the working lifeक्योंकि सेवानिवृत्ति में आवश्यक आय कार्यकारी जीवन की शुरुआत में ही निश्चितता से तय की जा सकती है
- Because the many variables used to estimate the goal are likely to change several times over its long periodsक्योंकि लक्ष्य के अनुमान में प्रयुक्त अनेक चर (variables) इसकी लंबी अवधियों में कई बार बदल सकते हैं
- Because the retirement goal has the shortest accumulation period of all goals
- Because retirement needs can easily be funded by a loan if the corpus falls short
Show answer & explanation
Answer: B — Because the many variables used to estimate the goal are likely to change several times over its long periods
The workbook states that there are many variables in estimating the retirement goal and these are likely to change multiple times given the long periods involved, so rigour in setting them and periodic monitoring to incorporate changes is important. Income in retirement can be defined with certainty only close to retirement, the goal has the longest accumulation period, and no company lends for retirement needs.
Question 5
Which feature distinguishes the retirement goal from goals such as buying a house or a car, as per the workbook?
- It can be met easily through loans offered by financial institutions
- It has a fixed time horizon that can never be postponed
- It requires the smallest corpus among all financial goals
- It cannot be funded through a loan, as no company gives loans for retirement needs
Show answer & explanation
Answer: D — It cannot be funded through a loan, as no company gives loans for retirement needs
The workbook explains that many goals can be met through easily available loans, but that is not the case with retirement, since no company gives loans for meeting retirement needs. In fact the retirement goal is often delayed to adjust for other goals, and it requires the largest corpus.
