NISM-Series-X-B: Investment Adviser (Level 2) Certification Examination
What this chapter covers
The adviser's role around retirement and the core calculations — future expenses with FV, the corpus with PV at an inflation-adjusted rate, monthly savings with PMT — plus step-up SIPs, the cost of early EPF withdrawals, moving EPF and NPS between jobs, criteria for choosing products at each life stage, and raising philanthropy with clients.
What to master before the exam
- Inflation-adjusted return = (1 + return) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1: an 8% return with 6% inflation gives 1.89% a year, taken as 1.89% ÷ 12 a month in the workbook's monthly example.
- Corpus example: age 35, retiring at 60, living to 85; expenses at 60% of today's Rs 25,000 = Rs 15,000 a month, inflated at 7% for 25 years = Rs 81,411 ⇒ a corpus of about Rs 1.95 crore with PV at 1.89% ÷ 12 over 300 months.
- Monthly savings with PMT at 12% for a corpus of Rs 1.18 crore: Rs 3,376 from age 30, Rs 6,280 from 35 and Rs 11,928 from 40 — each five years of delay nearly doubles the instalment.
- Rs 75,000 withdrawn from EPF 30 years before retirement would have grown to Rs 8.66 lakh at 8.5%; transferring EPF through the 12-digit UAN avoids the tax on withdrawals before 5 years, and a subscriber keeps one PRAN across jobs.
- Retirement expenses are roughly 50–60% of current expenses if there are no liabilities; when income rises 10%, a SIP can step up by at least 5–7%; beyond 75 the focus is capital protection and liquidity for heirs.
Exam tip: Part of Module 8 (30 marks) and the source of the retirement case numericals: FV of expenses, the real rate, PV of the corpus and PMT for savings. Read whether the question puts payments at the start (type 1) or end (type 0) of each period.

Question 1
Which of the following is a solution to manage inadequacy of the retirement corpus closer to retirement?
- Invest in riskier assets
- Reduce periodic savings
- Increase the corpus target
Show answer & explanation
Answer: A — Postpone retirement
The workbook says that not having enough funds for the retirement years will force one either to work for more years (i.e. postpone retirement) or to adopt strategies to reduce lifestyle so that the money lasts longer. Close to retirement the ability to take risk is low, and cutting savings or raising the target worsens the gap.
Question 2
Which of the following is NOT among the areas on which the workbook says an Investment Adviser will be able to advise a client in retirement planning?
- What withdrawal rate is appropriate when withdrawing money from a traditional portfolio
- Whether a reverse mortgage is a good option for the client
- Whether the client should keep their life insurance policies
- Promising the client a fixed return on an equity portfolio
Show answer & explanation
Answer: D — Promising the client a fixed return on an equity portfolio
The workbook's list includes when to take employer benefits, pension distribution choices, whether an annuity is suitable, the retirement income one could reasonably expect, the appropriate withdrawal rate, restructuring investments to reduce taxable income, paying off a mortgage, whether a reverse mortgage is a good option and whether to keep life insurance policies. Promising a fixed return on equity is not advice and is not in the list.
Question 3
If there are no liabilities, the workbook estimates that expenses at retirement are roughly what proportion of one's existing expenses?
- 20% to 30%20% से 30% तक
- 50% to 60%50% से 60% तक
- 80% to 90%80% से 90% तक
- 100% to 110%100% से 110% तक
Show answer & explanation
Answer: B — 50% to 60%
The workbook says one can estimate that expenses at retirement are roughly 50%-60% of existing expenses if there are no liabilities, since one is free from loans and children's goals; the high cost of medication at a higher age should still be considered. Its corpus illustration uses 60% of the current monthly expense.
Question 4
A person spends Rs. 20,000 a month today. To sustain the same standard of living after 20 years, with inflation expected at 7% p.a., approximately how much will he need per month?
Show answer & explanation
Answer: C — Rs. 77,394
Required expense = 20,000 x (1.07)^20 = Rs. 77,394. Rs. 48,000 uses simple interest (20,000 x 2.4), Rs. 64,143 uses 6% inflation and Rs. 1,08,549 compounds for 25 years. The workbook uses the same logic: an expense grows by the inflation rate every year.
Question 5
In the workbook's retirement corpus illustration, the corpus is expected to earn 8% p.a. and post-retirement inflation is 6% p.a., with monthly expenses. What "rate" is entered in the Excel PV function?
Show answer & explanation
Answer: A — 1.89%/12 per month
The inflation-adjusted return on the corpus = (1 + 8%)/(1 + 6%) - 1 = 1.89% p.a.; since expenses are monthly, the rate used is 1.89%/12 per month, with nper = 25 x 12 = 300 months. Using 8%/12 ignores the rise in expenses during retirement; 2% is a simple subtraction.
