Question 1
Income earned by an individual during the period 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026 will be assessed to tax in:
  1. Assessment Year 2025-26निर्धारण वर्ष (AY) 2025-26
  2. Financial Year 2026-27वित्तीय वर्ष (FY) 2026-27
  3. Assessment Year 2026-27निर्धारण वर्ष (AY) 2026-27
  4. Previous Year 2026-27पिछला वर्ष (PY) 2026-27
Show answer & explanation
Answer: C — Assessment Year 2026-27
The financial year for which income is computed is the previous year (here FY 2025-26). The assessment year is the 12-month period starting 1 April immediately following it — AY 2026-27 (sections 2(9) and 3).
Question 2
Under section 6(1A), an Indian citizen whose Indian income exceeds Rs.15 lakh and who is not liable to tax in any other country by reason of domicile or residence is deemed to be resident in India. Such a deemed resident is always treated as:
  1. Resident and ordinarily residentनिवासी और साधारण निवासी (ROR)
  2. Resident but not ordinarily residentनिवासी परंतु साधारण निवासी नहीं (RNOR)
  3. Non-residentअनिवासी (Non-resident)
  4. Resident only if he also stays 120 days in India
Show answer & explanation
Answer: B — Resident but not ordinarily resident
The workbook states that a deemed resident under section 6(1A) is always treated as Resident but Not Ordinarily Resident; becoming resident by virtue of this clause is itself one of the NOR conditions.
Question 3
Mr. Kiran, an Indian citizen, returned to India after years of working abroad and stayed in India for 200 days in FY 2025-26. His stay in India in each of the 7 financial years preceding FY 2025-26 was 120, 100, 90, 110, 80, 95 and 85 days. What is his residential status for FY 2025-26?
  1. Non-resident
  2. Resident and ordinarily residentनिवासी और साधारण निवासी (ROR)
  3. Deemed resident under section 6(1A)धारा 6(1A) के अंतर्गत deemed resident
  4. Resident but not ordinarily residentनिवासी परंतु साधारण निवासी नहीं (RNOR)
Show answer & explanation
Answer: D — Resident but not ordinarily resident
200 days ≥ 182 days, so he is resident. His stay in the 7 preceding years = 120+100+90+110+80+95+85 = 680 days, i.e. 729 days or less, so he satisfies one NOR condition — that is enough to make him Resident but Not Ordinarily Resident (as in the workbook's Mr. C example).
Question 4
Mr. John, a foreign national who is not a person of Indian origin, stayed in India for 70 days in FY 2025-26 and for 400 days in total during the four preceding financial years. For FY 2025-26 he is:
  1. Resident, as he satisfies the 60 days + 365 days (in 4 preceding years) test
  2. Non-resident, as he stayed for less than 182 days
  3. Non-resident, as the 60-day test applies only to Indian citizens
  4. Deemed resident under section 6(1A)धारा 6(1A) के अंतर्गत deemed resident हैं
Show answer & explanation
Answer: A — Resident, as he satisfies the 60 days + 365 days (in 4 preceding years) test
For other foreign nationals (Part 3), a person is resident if he stays 182 days or more, or 60 days or more (but less than 182) in the year and 365 days or more in the 4 preceding years. 70 days and 400 days satisfy the second test. Section 6(1A) applies only to Indian citizens.
Question 5
Ms. Leena is resident but not ordinarily resident (RNOR) for FY 2025-26. She earns interest on a savings account with a bank in the USA (not connected with any business controlled from India or profession set up in India). This interest is:
  1. Taxable in India, as every resident is taxed on worldwide income
  2. Taxable in India only if remitted to India within six months
  3. Not taxable in India
  4. Taxable in India at a flat rate of 20%भारत में 20% की समान दर पर कर-योग्य है
Show answer & explanation
Answer: C — Not taxable in India
Per Table 7.1, income accruing outside India (other than from a business controlled from India or a profession set up in India) is taxable for a ROR but not for a RNOR or non-resident. The workbook's Mr. A example: the US bank interest would not be taxed in India if he were RNOR.
